The Impact of COVID-19 on the US Foster Care System
By K. Roberts| January 25, 2023
The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the US foster care system. This included both the number of children entering the foster care system and how foster care services were delivered.
The number of kids increased
One of the most significant impacts of the pandemic on the foster care system was an increase in the number of children entering the system. This was due to the economic hardship caused by the pandemic, as well as the increased stress and strain on families. Many families lost their jobs or experienced significant financial difficulties due to the pandemic, making it difficult for them to care for their children. Additionally, the closure of schools and other community resources made it more difficult for parents to access the support they needed to care for their children. As a result, more children were removed from their homes and placed in foster care.
Pandemic harm
The pandemic altered the way foster care services were delivered. In-person visits between foster children and their families had been limited or suspended in some cases due to the need for social distancing and other measures to prevent the virus from spreading. As a result, it was more difficult for children to maintain relationships with their families, potentially harming their emotional and psychological well-being. Moreover, the closure of schools and other community resources had made it more difficult for foster children to access necessary educational and other social services.
The foster care system had even more pressing difficulties as a result of the pandemic. Because of the increased demand for foster care services, many foster care providers, for example, had struggled to find new placements for children. Furthermore, there had been a shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) for foster care workers, making it more difficult for them to care for children in their homes safely.
Utilizing technology
Despite these obstacles and life-changing events, the foster care system quickly made changes in order to respond to the pandemic. Many foster care providers, for example, turned to technology to help maintain contact between children and their families, such as video conferencing. Additionally, many providers increased their use of telemedicine to provide remote mental health and other services to children and families.
However, the pandemic has highlighted the need for more funding and support for the foster care system, which was already stretched thin prior to the pandemic. More resources are needed to support families and children who are at risk of entering the foster care system, as well as more funding for foster care providers.
Needs were spotlighted
COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the foster care system in the United States. The pandemic had resulted in an increase in the number of children entering the foster care system, as well as challenges in the delivery of foster care services. Despite these obstacles, the foster care system has been able to adapt and respond to the pandemic. However, the pandemic has highlighted the need for additional support and resources for the foster care system. It is critical that the government and other stakeholders invest in the foster care system to ensure that children in foster care have access to the services and support they require during difficult times.
